HOW TO GET INVOLVED

There are many ways to get involved and support KRAN and our young people.

We are always open to new ideas and suggestions that build and respond to the needs of our young people.

BECOME A volunteer!

Thank you for your interest in becoming a KRAN volunteer - we really appreciate it. Unfortunately, we’re not looking for volunteers at the moment, other than mentors in the Canterbury and Folkestone areas. The application form below is only for prospective mentors.

Please note, to become a mentor, we ask that you commit for a minimum of nine months and that you are able to meet your mentee for one-two hours a week.

To find out about future volunteering opportunities, please sign up to our Facebook page where we will post when opportunities come up. Thank you.

From time to time we need dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to support the vital work with young asylum seekers and refugees in Kent.

Volunteers have supported our young people in many ways including:

  • being a mentor

  • assisting in the classroom

  • tutoring in English and maths

  • accompanying them to appointments

  • giving advice about shopping and budgeting

  • sharing their practical hobbies and skills

  • helping to set up and run sports and other activities

  • providing work experience

  • helping KRAN’s hubs run smoothly as welcoming, safe spaces

  • being a friendly face and listening ear.

We don’t always need volunteers in all of these areas, but we always like to hear from people who are keen to join us - and we are always open to new ideas too!

Volunteer Roles

Mentoring and befriending

Become a mentor to aid a young person through their transition to life in the UK.

Provide one to one support to a young asylum seeker or refugee. The mentoring relationship provides friendship for socially isolated young migrants. It aims to ease their integration into local community life by helping to build their self-esteem, confidence and language skills.

A mentor will meet a young person once a week for 1-2 hours. Activities in this time could include coffee and a chat, help with reading letters, college work or English.

We offer full training and ongoing supervision and an opportunity to attend talks and events organised by KRAN. You must be over 18 and able to commit to this role for at least nine months. A DBS check is essential and will be organised via the project. Our main office is in Canterbury, from where we support the majority of our clients. However, we need volunteers who can support a young person in Folkestone, Ashford, or Dover.

Contact Gareth on 07522 306812 or at mentoring@kran.org.uk or complete our volunteer application form to express your interest.

“It is a great opportunity to do something very positive and uplifting for another individual. You make a friend for life and you will certainly learn and think a lot about how and why people want to come to the UK”
