young people on a role!
Whoever they are, wherever they are from, children have a right to safety.
This is the thinking behind From Here On, an ambitious new project from world-renowned theatre companies Good Chance and Gecko - and us!
Eighty-five years since the Kindertransport saved 10,000 Jewish children from Nazi-occupied Europe (including KRAN Patron Lord Alf Dubs), the production brings its history to life. This is alongside global contemporary stories of children seeking sanctuary now.
It is a powerful exploration of displacement, movement and being forced to find a new home, featuring 40 young people (YP) from around the world, including some from KRAN’s Folkestone hub.
Our YP had an incredibly positive experience working with Good Chance (creators of The Walk with Little Amal) and Gecko, and their feedback reflects the joy and excitement they felt. The feedback also highlights the connection they formed with the theatre makers and the fun they had while learning new skills.
One YP says: “I loved my friends from Good Chance and Gecko from when I met them and we started dancing together. I was so happy.”
Another expressed gratitude, adding: “I also learned things that I did not know before. Thank you to friends and teachers and all who were with us.”
The energy, friendliness and creativity brought by the theatre makers left a lasting impact; as one says: “They were good, they were nice people and we had fun and we laughed a lot.”
The result is a large-scale production at Harwich (30 August and 1 September) and London’s Liverpool Street Station (6 and 8 September) - both synonymous with Kindertransport.
Our YP’s work is captured on film, while the other cast members join Gecko’s professional ensemble live for the free shows.
There will be a special presentation of From Here On for all our young people in Folkestone later in the year.
The production is in association with Safe Passage International.
