KRAN manifesto - Education
By Djafarou, Ibrahim and Roya
UASC (Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children) in the UK education system encounter many disadvantages due to their unique circumstances.
These barriers mean they will not be able to fulfil their true potential in school and will underperform in exams, hindering further progression.
Many UASC do not have access to education and therefore, are not getting the same access as those in a setting. The government should make education more accessible for UASC, as well as other refugees and asylum seekers.
Barriers our young people face:
language
trauma and mental health issues
lack of stability
social integration difficulties, discrimination and bullying.
Solutions:
schools and colleges should be given support to provide better access in terms of language barriers, such as offering some qualifications in different languages. For example, many UASC are excellent at mathematics but they cannot demonstrate their abilities due to the exams being in English
There are private organisations that offer exams (such as Maths GCSE) translated into different languages, this is at a cost but this should be part of the statutory offer. The government should look at making this accessible to UASC
school counsellors should be trained in working with those affected by traumatic events and external difficulties unique to UASCs
There should be wider programmes offered to educate children in schools about diversity and inclusion so that UASC feel that school is a safe space for them.
Addressing these disadvantages requires comprehensive support systems in the education system, including language support, mental health services, cultural sensitivity training for staff, and policies that promote inclusivity and equality for all students.
