solutions to challenges

By Rishan, Media Ambassador

In the face of ongoing challenges and misconceptions - and spurred on by the general election - our young people have come together to present a KRAN manifesto. This addresses five key areas of concern: Housing, Right to Vote, Media Representation, Education, Safe Routes.

Refugees bring valuable skills, experiences and cultural richness to the UK, contributing as professionals, students, artists, and entrepreneurs, enhancing the economy and community life. We are committed to learning, contributing and participating fully in society. However, to achieve this, we need understanding, support and opportunities in education, employment and social services.

Housing

Challenges: refugees encounter structural racism, stigma and misinformation and authority changes - as well as the national housing crisis. These issues result in precarious living conditions and frequent relocations.

Our solutions: equal treatment, policy clarity, extended support, landlord training, targeted support.

Right to Vote

Challenges: many refugees, despite having leave to remain, are unable to vote, leading to feelings of exclusion and second-class citizenship. This lack of representation means their voices are not heard in decisions that affect their lives.

Our solutions: legislative reform, support systems, election security.

Media Representation

Challenges: negative media narratives, misconceptions, the resulting emotional impact.

Our solutions: build solidarity and support networks, training and cultural sensitivity, collaborative journalism, balanced and accurate reporting, diverse voices.

Education

Challenges: unaccompanied asylum-seeking children in the UK face numerous disadvantages due to their unique circumstances. Limited proficiency in English, trauma from past experiences, mental health issues and instability in housing significantly hinder their academic performance and social integration.

Our solutions: language support; mental health support; cultural sensitivity, promotion of inclusivity polices.

Safe Routes

Challenges: many refugees are labelled as “illegal” due to their entry methods, often resulting in dangerous situations and exploitation. Refugees flee due to war, conflict and increasingly, climate change.

Our solutions: establish secure, legal pathways; international collaboration; community support.
