UNRAVELLING The stories
By Rishan, Media Ambassador
In a world often characterised by division and uncertainty, it takes a unique perspective to bridge the gap and foster understanding. Gavin Esler, our new Patron, is a storyteller with a career exceeding journalism and fiction. Here he opens up about his inspiration to support KRAN and the profound experiences that have shaped his world view.
A Journey of compassion:
Gavin talked about his wish to support those in need, sharing his experience of witnessing the arrival of a boat in the UK carrying individuals who had faced unimaginable hardships. Other heartbreaking scenes of suffering, arrests and even deaths have fuelled his passion to make a difference to the lives of those seeking refuge.
As a storyteller, Gavin recognises the power of narratives in shaping perceptions. Reflecting on his own identity, he shares the findings of Strathclyde University's research into his family history, revealing a connection to refugees and asylum seekers in the 17th Century (his family were forced to move from Germany to Scotland and Ireland), reinforcing the idea that we are all, in essence, from somewhere else.
The power of storytelling at KRAN:
Gavin's involvement with KRAN is rooted in providing support, his genuine desire to understand and learn more about the organisation and the people it serves. As a storyteller, he believes in the changing narrative that KRAN embodies – a story that should remain with people, urging them to understand the difference between asylum seekers and migrants and to recognise the unique challenges faced by those seeking safety in the UK.
Gavin is keen to use his expertise to amplify the voices of young people supported by KRAN. He emphasises the importance of allowing these individuals to share their stories without the interference of other journalists who only focus on the numbers rather than the human experiences behind them.
Building a better future for all:
In discussing his latest books (How Britain Ends and Britain is Better Than This), Gavin prompts readers to contemplate the essence of a great country. He challenges common misconceptions about national identity. His goal is to educate and enlighten, emphasising that the diversity of backgrounds and stories is what truly defines the United Kingdom.
In addition, Gavin believes that fostering understanding and challenging misconceptions is vital for building a better future. By unravelling the stories of individuals who may seem like “others” or “strangers”, he hopes to demonstrate that everyone in the UK has a unique heritage, with roots in countries like Germany, Belgium, and France.
Changing the conversation:
Gavin is determined to reshape the narrative surrounding refugees and asylum seekers. He advocates for understanding, urging journalists to differentiate between those seeking safety and those arriving for work or study. Changing the conversation, in his view, involves telling real-life stories that humanise the struggles faced by refugees, ultimately challenging preconceived notions.
Life beyond work:
Beyond his professional work, Gavin shares insights into his personal life. He enjoys taking long walks with his two dogs and swims in the sea (stopping in November and starting again in March!), as well as reading and writing.
