coming together at conference

By Rishan, Media Ambassador

Along with Osama (our Activities and Wellbeing Coordinator), I had the honour of hosting the Kent Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASC) Networking Forum Conference at Dover Castle.

Participants listened to Dr Richard Warren, of Kent Law Clinic (University of Kent), who explained the implications of the recent legislation on young refugees and asylum seekers. Participants explored through workshops, emotional wellbeing among young people, with Taylor Mitchell and Lathangie Baskaran (Refugee Council), delving into housing options guided by Mark Weinel, Seb Blythe, and Gerry Aitken (Kent County Council), and gained insights into education, employment with Catherine Thompson (KCC Virtual School Kent) and Rob Spicer (East Kent College), and leisure activities facilitated by Clare Barton and Sarah Murison (KCC Social Connections/Young Lives Foundation).

The afternoon sessions shifted focus to the unique needs of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children, featuring specialised services from Kent County Council experts, Alex Stringer, Sharni Bhangu and Ali Watlin. Neil Thayne (Refugee Council) shared invaluable asylum advice, providing a critical understanding of the implications of new policies.

There was a call for action from a ground-level perspective on the implications of the Illegal Migration Act 2023 by Dr Razia Shariff, KRAN CEO. with real stories of the impact on young people - this session offered a profound exploration of the act's consequences.

Adding a personal touch, the conference gave a platform to young voices. Attendees heard directly from KRAN’s Youth Ambassadors, along with representatives from Young Lives Foundation and KCC Virtual School Kent - Young Adult Council Extra.

Participants had the opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences during the feedback sessions; their insights were crucial in shaping the discourse around child migration and asylum policies. The conference proved to be a unique and transformative opportunity to be part of a significant conversation!
