looking beyond labels

By Rishan, Youth Influencer

The phrase "no one is illegal" challenges us to look beyond the labels of nationality, race, and ethnicity, and recognise the intrinsic worth and rights of every individual.

At its core, the phrase asserts that the mere act of crossing a border should not diminish a person's humanity or strip them of their basic rights. It emphasises the universality of human rights and the shared responsibility we all have to ensure the well-being and safety of one another.

The concept of "no one is illegal" urges us to approach immigration and border issues with compassion and empathy. It invites us to consider the circumstances that might compel someone to leave their home in search of safety or a better life for their family. By empathising with the challenges faced by refugees, we can move beyond prejudice and stereotypes and work towards solutions that prioritise human dignity.

In addition, the phrase also calls attention to the need for comprehensive immigration reform in many parts of the world. Outdated and rigid immigration policies often contribute to a cycle of human suffering, exploitation, and marginalisation.

By recognising the humanity of all individuals, regardless of their legal status, we can advocate for policies that provide pathways to legal immigration, protect the rights of refugees, and address the root causes of migration.
