This Mental Health Awareness Week (13 to 19 May), it’s crucial to shine a light on the often overlooked struggles of refugee youth.

At KRAN, we're deeply committed to providing holistic support to these resilient young individuals, recognising that their journey to mental well-being is intertwined with their experiences of displacement and cultural adjustment.

This journey is often fraught with challenges that can be both profound and multifaceted. The trauma of displacement, the loss of familiar surroundings and the uncertainty of the future can weigh heavily on their minds and hearts.

The process of adapting to a new culture, language and societal norms can further exacerbate feelings of isolation and alienation. Moreover, the Rwanda Act has negatively impacted our young people's mental health. Many are experiencing increased stress and anxiety as they’re living in limbo not knowing what to do and where to go. This has created more challenges to young people's lives and made it hard to address or prioritise mental health while all these difficulties exist.

Although KRAN is not a specialist mental health provider, we understand that addressing the mental health needs of refugee youth requires a nuanced and compassionate approach. We strive to create a safe and supportive environment where they feel empowered to express themselves, seek help when needed and embark on a journey of healing and resilience. Through our diverse range of programmes and activities, we aim to foster a sense of belonging and community among refugee youth.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we urge everyone to lend their support and solidarity to refugee youth. Let's raise awareness about the importance of mental well-being for all individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances. Together, we can create a world where every young person - including refugee youth - has the opportunity to thrive and flourish.
