as if more evidence was needed…

In its recent briefing Immigration and the NHS: the Evidence, The Health Foundation states that “immigration has a positive impact on the NHS. Many migrants work in healthcare, use NHS services less than average and contribute more through taxes and visa fees than the cost of the care they receive.”

The report also says that the main challenges facing the NHS are funding, staff shortages and growing healthcare needs - not immigration.

I am reminded of my own journey: I came to the UK as a child refugee, looking for safety and a chance to rebuild my life. It wasn't easy, but with hard work and support, I completed a university degree in nursing and now have the privilege of working in the NHS, caring for patients and giving back to the country that welcomed me.

My KRAN colleague Luwam has a similar story: she came to the UK as a child refugee and will soon complete her degree, qualifying an an NHS occupational therapist.

As well as working as a nurse and Luwam studying, we both also work at KRAN, supporting young refugees and asylum seekers as they build new lives in the UK. Every day we meet people who have skills, experience and determination. With the right support, they can study, work and make valuable contributions to their communities.

Our stories show what is possible when refugees are given the chance to succeed. I am proud to work for the NHS and have no doubt Luwam will feel the same. We are also proud to continue supporting others through our work with KRAN.
