family tree connects us all
A tree label made by one of our young people.

Family is more than just a word. It is a sense of belonging, a source of love and often, the foundation of who we are. Whether we're living side by side or separated by thousands of miles, the connection to our families shapes our identity and gives us strength.
At KRAN, we work closely with young refugees and asylum seekers who know the meaning of family all too well - not through presence, but often through painful absence. Being far from loved ones, unsure of their safety or when they’ll next hear their voices, is a daily emotional struggle many of our young people live with.
On this United Nation’s International Day of Families (15 May), we honour these connections - near or far - and acknowledge the courage of young people who continue to build new lives, hold onto hope and carry their families with them in heart and memory. We also honour the wonderful foster families who help them do this (and so much more).
Let this day also be a reminder of the importance of community, solidarity and support: the chosen families that grow around us and the shared responsibility to uplift one another. This feels more important now than ever before.
