Black history month reflections by youth ambassador rishan
What is Black History Month, and why do we celebrate it every year in October.
Black History Month gives us insight to see how people can overcome the challenges and difficulties in life. It allows us to understand that we are all human beings and we should open our hearts to each other.
In 2020 we saw how people stood together to stop racism and fight for the same goal. This helped us to see the bigger picture of the world, which is that we must treat everyone equally no matter what colour their skin is, their state, their gender and where they come from. Opportunity comes from being kind and treating people in the same way that we wanted to be treated. “We all require and want Respect, Man or Women, Black or White. It’s our basic human Right.” Aretha Franklin.
So many things change in our lives as we continue to grow. Our world continues moving forward but many people find it difficult to accept that our world is full of diverse people and multiculturalism. Every day we learn something new as we ask questions and celebrate our achievements. But when will we accept and learn from each other? “It is not our diversity that divides us; it is not our ethnicity, or religion or culture that divides us. Since we have achieved our freedom, there can only be one division amongst us: between those who cherish democracy and those who do not.” Nelson Mandela.
Black History Month not only allows us to see the challenges and difficulties that people face. It also is an opportunity to celebrate other people's achievements while overcoming racism and oppression. It reminds us that we need to be connected and that we are all equal, yet unique. In KRAN we recognise and celebrate the diversity of our young people. We advocate for equal opportunities for all our young people. We not only promote diversity. We celebrate it. Diversity is beautiful. By raising awareness of each person’s uniqueness and potential, we honour each other. “When we’re talking about diversity, it’s not a box to check. It is a reality that should be deeply felt and held and valued by all of us” Ava Duvernay.
